Swansea: South West Wales 

 

Introduction

Swansea is a country situated in south western Wales. It has an estimated population of 245,500 (according to 2018 estimate). Swansea’s area comprises of Swansea Bay and Gower peninsula. It is ranked as the second largest city in Wales, in united kingdom it is the twenty fifth largest city.

History

It was discovered by Archaelogists that Swansea area comes majorly from the Gower peninsula, which includes items from stone age, bronze age and iron age. The city was initially occupied by Romans and was said to have developed via a Viking trading post.

The country was established by King Sweyn Forkbeard and was firstly called Sweynesse. Sometime between 1158 and 1184, William de Newburgh granted Swansea a charter which gave them some dignified right to develop the area. King John gave out the second charter in 1215 with the name Sweyneshe.

The city had a drastic expansion in the 18th and 19th centuries and it barged the name “Copperopolis”. It finally became a country on the first of April, 1996 (1, April 1996).

Government

Swansea city has a council. It is a unitary authority governmental system. The council comprises of 72 councillors who are elected by May every year representing 36 electoral wards. The labour party controls the council and it is overseed  by the Lord Mayor.

Economy

From the 18th century, Swansea developed as a centre for metals and mining; especially the copper industry. After the second world war, the declination of the heavy industries made Swansea city economy to trend towards the post industrial and service sector.

In Swansea city, 90% of the employee’s work in the service sector which include professional, administrative/secretarial and sales/customer service occupations. It is also home to Swansea University.

Landmark and Tourists Attractions

The Swansea Bays is one of the major attraction of tourists in the city especially the possibility of surfing in Bays such as Langland bay, Caswell bay and Llangennith because of its waves. Aside this, the Dylan Thomas centre situated in the Maritime quarter is a sight to behold.

It serves as the point for the annual Dylan Thomas festival which comes up between 27th October – 9th of November every year. Swansea’s uniqueness can also be traced to its various parks, gardens and approximately 20 nature reserves. The city’s beaches are also incomparable to none as it won numerous awards in the year 2006.

Sport

In a  bid to promote the country, Swansea is highly recognized with the following games: football, rugby and cricket. In 1912, the Swansea city A.F.C was founded which is the main football association in the city. The city also had three football association clubs in the Welsh football league.

They are : Garden village, South Gower and West end. It also has the Swansea’s rugby league. Swansea opened its stadium in 2008 which hosted the World indoor singles and Mixed Paris championship in April,2008. In 2009, It also hosted the Gravelles Welsh international open bowls championship.

Nightlife

Undoubtedly, there’s life after daytime in the city of Swansea. It’s range of pubs, bars, clubs, restaurants and a casino are sincerely worth while.

Swansea is a business oriented city that also uphold moral and cultural uprightness. The county is filled with experience and life lingering activities. The creative, sportive, diligent and innovative life of its citizens makes Swansea a Paradise on earth thereby making the city the best place to live in.
